Stem Cells for Emphysema

By Priyanka Dutta Deb| Last Updated at: 24th Feb '25| 16 Min Read

Emphysema, a chronic lung disease that primarily affects the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, is a major cause of disability and death worldwide. This damage leads to

  • difficulty breathing,
  • reduced oxygen levels in the bloodstream, and
  • an overall decline in lung function.

Emphysema

It falls under the umbrella of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In India, the prevalence of COPD, including emphysema, has been on the rise due to factors such as increased pollution, smoking, and occupational hazards. According to a study published in The Lancet, over 55 million people in India were affected by COPD in 2016, and the numbers have only increased since then.

Despite advances in medical treatment, emphysema remains a progressive and incurable disease. Conventional treatments focus on managing symptoms and slowing the disease’s progression but do not offer a cure. However, recent advancements in regenerative medicine, particularly stem cell therapy, have sparked hope for patients with emphysema. Stem cell treatment for emphysema is an emerging therapy that aims to repair lung tissue, potentially altering the course of the disease.

What is the role of stem cells in emphysema?

Stem cells play a critical role in treating emphysema by offering a regenerative approach to lung repair. Unlike conventional treatments that primarily focus on managing symptoms, stem cell therapy aims to address the underlying damage to the lung tissue. The role of stem cells in emphysema treatment includes several key functions:

  1. Tissue Regeneration: Stem cells can differentiate into various types of lung cells, helping to regenerate damaged alveoli and improve lung function.
  2. Inflammation Reduction: Emphysema is often accompanied by chronic inflammation, exacerbating lung damage. Stem cells release anti-inflammatory factors that help reduce inflammation and prevent further tissue destruction.
  3. Immune Modulation: Stem cells can modulate the immune response, reducing the activity of immune cells that may contribute to the destruction of lung tissue in emphysema patients.
  4. Angiogenesis: Stem cells promote the formation of new blood vessels, which are crucial for delivering oxygen to the newly formed lung tissue and enhancing overall lung function.
  5. Symptom Relief: By repairing and regenerating lung tissue, stem cell therapy can lead to improved lung function, reduced shortness of breath, and an enhanced quality of life for patients with emphysema.

While stem cell therapy for emphysema is promising, it is still in the experimental stage, and patients should consult with their healthcare provider to determine if this treatment suits them.

Is stem cell treatment for emphysema FDA-approved?

Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved stem cell therapy specifically for treating emphysema. This lack of approval is largely due to the need for more extensive clinical trials to establish the safety and efficacy of the treatment.

However, several clinical trials are underway, and some have shown promising results. The FDA has approved certain types of stem cells for other conditions, which has paved the way for more research into their application for emphysema and other lung diseases.

The regulatory environment in India is different. While stem cell therapy is offered in several hospitals and clinics, patients must verify that the treatment is conducted under ethical guidelines and with appropriate oversight.

Cost of Stem Cell Therapy for Emphysema in India

In India, stem cell therapy for emphysema is more affordable than in Western countries, making it an attractive option for patients seeking advanced treatment. Here's a comparison of the cost of stem cell therapy for emphysema in India versus Western countries:

  • The cost of stem cell therapy for emphysema ranges from approximately $8,000 to $12,000, depending on the treatment center, the number of sessions required, and the type of stem cells used.
  • In the United States, stem cell therapy for emphysema can range from $20,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the clinic, the number of treatments, and the type of stem cells utilized.
  • European countries may offer stem cell therapy from approximately $17,000 to $45,000.

Factors affecting the cost of stem cell treatment in India

India's lower cost is due to reduced overhead expenses, competitive pricing, and the availability of advanced medical technology.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: India offers a more cost-effective solution without compromising the quality of care. Patients can receive advanced stem cell therapy at a fraction of the cost compared to Western countries.
  • Quality of Care: Indian hospitals are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and are staffed by highly trained professionals, ensuring that patients receive world-class care at a lower cost.
  • Accessibility: India’s growing reputation as a hub for medical tourism makes stem cell therapy more accessible to international patients seeking affordable treatment options.

What Are the Benefits of Stem Cells for Emphysema?

Stem cell therapy for emphysema is gaining attention due to its potential to address the underlying causes of the disease. The benefits of this treatment include:

  • Targeted Regeneration: Stem cell therapy aims to regenerate damaged lung tissue, potentially restoring lung function.
  • Reduced Inflammation: Stem cell therapy may help prevent further lung damage and improve the overall quality of life by modulating the immune response and reducing inflammation.
  • Improved Respiratory Function: Patients undergoing stem cell treatment for emphysema have reported improved breathing, reduced shortness of breath, and increased exercise tolerance.
  • Minimally Invasive Procedure: Stem cell therapy is typically administered via intravenous infusion or directly into the lungs using a bronchoscope, making it a minimally invasive option compared to surgical interventions.
  • Potential to Slow Disease Progression: While not a cure, stem cell therapy can slow the progression of emphysema by addressing the root causes of lung damage.

What Are the Risks of Stem Cells for Emphysema?

As with any medical treatment, stem cell therapy for emphysema carries certain risks. These risks include:

  • Immune Rejection: Although rare, there is a possibility that the body may reject the infused stem cells, leading to complications.
  • Infection: The procedure carries a risk of infection, especially if cells are directly introduced into the lungs.
  • Tumor Formation: There is a theoretical risk that stem cells could differentiate uncontrollably, leading to tumor formation. However, this risk is considered low with proper screening and use of high-quality stem cells.
  • Unproven Long-Term Effects: Stem cell therapy for emphysema is still in the experimental stages, so the long-term effects have yet to be fully known. Patients should be aware of this uncertainty when considering treatment.
  • Cost and Accessibility: Stem cell therapy can be expensive, and the treatment is not widely available in all regions, which may limit accessibility for some patients.

It is crucial to have an in-depth discussion with a healthcare provider to weigh the potential benefits and risks before proceeding with stem cell therapy for emphysema.

What symptoms would indicate that the treatment might not be successful?

Male | 59

If the treatment doesn't seem to be working, some diagnostics to keep an eye out for are if your symptoms don't improve or actually get worse, if new symptoms emerge that weren't present earlier, or if you experience side effects from the treatment. These things could be the indications that the specific therapy is not your cup of tea. In such cases, it's crucial to the doctor to discuss other alternative solutions that may suit you better.

I am having cough which looks more allergic. And phlegm and wheezing sound only appears when I coughs. It's like someone is choking you when you have the cough. It really hurts my throat and head while coughing. And sometimes maybe due to my panic, cough results in cough syncope. I also have antral gastritis. I have been diagnosed with bronchitis 6 months back. My chest Xray shows only small prominence in right lungs and rest is normal. CT is normal, XRay is normal. Only my TLC count is elavated to 17000 and however eosphil and basophil count is normal. I am slightly anemic. According to my doc, my body is unable to absorb iron. My O2 and BP all are normal during my cough episode. However, I feel tremor throughout my body and sometimes my hands and legs become pale while I cough. I am perfectly normal if I don't have the cough episodes. I also has slight GERD maybe due to antral gastritis.
