- As our doctors recommend, wear compression garments:
- They put pressure on the operation site, forcing the body to reabsorb lymphatic fluids, so they don't build up under the skin and lead to swelling.
- Shapewear does not provide the same compression as these garments and may therefore be ineffective for patients post liposuction.
- Only remove it while showering.
- Lymphatic drainage massages:
- The lymphatic system drains stale water and waste. The trained masseuse will know how to mobilize excess fluid from swelling and pace up healing.
- Get massage from a licensed therapist.
- It will have to be done 3 - 4 times.
- Watching your diet post-surgery is important to maximize the results:
- Food items that promote swelling & puffiness:
- Excess salt causes the body cause to retain more water.
- Alcohol is dehydrating and causes the body to retain more water.
- Eat healthy, unprocessed food items rich in vitamin C, zinc, and protein.
- Your surgeon may advise you to consume arnica, a herb known to reduce swelling.
- Apply ice packs on treated areas:
- Perform this on swollen parts of your body for 15-20 minutes an hour can help reduce swelling on the first and second-day post liposuction surgery.
- Ask doctor for detailed instructions regarding how to apply cold compress post-surgery and how often, because incorrect application may cause damage.
- Take prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs:
- Anti-inflammatory painkillers alleviate pain and inflammation. However, as they have a blood-thinning effect, they should be taken according to the doctor's prescription.
- Do not take OTC anti-inflammatory drugs during the recovery phase.
- Doctors suggest that the fluid and swelling decrease after at least 10 to 14 days from surgery. But for it to entirely disappear, it will take time.

To prevent fluid-filled pockets after liposuction, follow postoperative care instructions carefully which involves putting on compression garments and keep yourself hydrated. Elevate the treated area to minimize swelling and perform manual lymphatic drainage with your surgeon’s advice. Attend regular post-operative visits to ensure progress of your healing process, and seek advice from the surgeon regarding persisting fluid pockets for individual recommendations and possible procedures.
