Should I go to hospital for swollen tonsils?

Patient's Query

I have glandular fever and was wondering if I should go into hospital or if there’s anything I can do to lessen the symptoms as my tonsils are very swollen and it hurts to talk and swallow my saliva as well as eat and drink

Answered by Dr. Babita Goel

Glandular fever, also known as infectious mononucleosis, could be causing your symptoms. This viral illness makes tonsils swell and hurt badly. You may have a sore throat, swollen glands, and feel exhausted. To ease discomfort, rest well, drink plenty of fluids, and take pain medication if needed. If swallowing is difficult, eat soft foods and avoid rough or spicy items. Consult an ENT doctor if symptoms worsen.

I have stuffy and runny nose since 3 weeks, have been using decongestants that provided some relief, but since last 3 days it is worse, continues runny nose all day, at the same time the nose is stuffy and heavy. Mucus from runny nose is mostly clear. In the morning I might cough out some yellow mucus.

Female | 37

You may have sinusitis or a sinus infection. Stuffy and runny nose with clear mucus are common symptoms of sinusitis. The yellow mucus that you cough up in the morning is a sign that it may be bacterial. To relieve congestion, try applying a warm compress across your face and seek medical attention for further assessment.

Female | 25

This sounds like what is called bolus sensation in the throat which usually is due to what's called acid reflux/ GERD. There can be many other cases too. Please visit ENT doctor for further evaluation and treatment.

I have been using sudafed nasal spray for about 5 days for a nasal drip. I stopped yesterday and have been feeling extremely congested like my sinus is swollen. Could this be rebound congestion? I've been using sinus rinse and a little relief but just feels like there could be some swelling

Male | 40

You could be suffering from rebound congestion. This is common when people use nasal sprays such as Sudafed for more than a couple of days. It may cause you to have swollen nasal passages with a feeling of being more congested. The saline sinus rinse is excellent at relieving the swelling. It's best to avoid overusing the nasal spray to prevent rebound congestion.

My grandfather age is 69 before 4 months he had second brain stroke now he has cough in his throat which not come out from his mouth so please doctor how to remove cough from throat

Male | 68

Your grandfather is likely experiencing throat congestion, which is common among stroke people. This could be caused by the fact that after a stroke, a person may have difficulty swallowing. When we swallow, the cough should come out of the mouth. Be sure to hydrate him by drinking lots of fluids. A speech therapist who can teach exercises to improve swallowing and coughing should be seen. Apart from that, he will also be able to make the cough from his throat disappear.

Am a 27 Y/O female. I got a cold about 2 weeks ago and I’m having a hard time getting over it. I still have wheezing, a wet cough, extreme fatigue, and phlegm, but my main issue is that my ear became very “stuffy” and it felt like there was fluid In Them. I wake up with drainage, and they pop often. I have pictures of my inner ear to share for more detail. I had tubes when I was young, and I had a very traumatic accident happen while they were in place, and my ears have been a pain ever since. I get extremely painful pressure when I fly to the point where I cry the whole flight if I don’t have my special ear plugs. And heaven forbid I get an ear infection. I cry anytime I have to put In ear drops

Female | 27

Oh i'm so sorry to hear your symptoms. It sounds like there is a lot going on in the ear canal and the tube connecting the ear to the nose which we call- The eustachian tube. Please visit your nearest ent who will do an endoscopy of the ear, get the hearing and e tube function evaluation and assess for chronic issues to ensure it doesn't get worse with time.
