Is abnormal MRI a concern if EEG is normal?

Patient's Query

Right basifrontal region focal encephalomalacia is seen measuring 3x2 cm (H/O prior trauma). MRI report is abnormal but my EEG test is normal

Answered by Dr. Gurneet Sawhney

You feel uneasy because of the MRI report that shows a spot in your brain. It may have been caused by a past injury. Encephalomalacia is the condition when brain tissue is damaged and can be of various types such as headaches or memory problems. The good news is that your brain's electrical activity seems okay. You only have to do two things: first of all, watch out for any new symptoms that may come up and report them to your neurologist.

I have been diagnosed with bells palsy for the past 2 weeks, so I want the best medicine?

Male | 24

For bells palsy consult a neurologist from a well known hospital in India or ENT specialist, for personalized treatment. There are a few common treatments like corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, eye care to protect the affected eye, and possibly physical therapy. There's no one size fits all medicine for this condition, so follow your doctor's advice for the most effective treatment plan for your needs.

I feel liquid in head when i move my head and i feel muscle streaching inside of my head when i move my head

Male | 37

When there is liquid talking in your ear or you hear that whooshing sound when you move your head it might be due to the fluid in your inner ear. the canals of your inner ear might have shifted. This occurs because the balance mechanism in your ear has been tampered. A feeling like stretching could be due to the tension that has grown inside the neck muscles. Try using gentle neck exercises as well as relaxation exercises and when these sensations linger, seek medical assistance.

I am 28 years old male. I am having severe throbbing headache on the sides of the head as well as on the eyes. I also have swelling on my eyelids. i have extreme headache when i bend down or sneeze/cough. I also have nausea and vomited x3-4 times today

Male | 28

It may sound like you have a condition known as sinusitis. Sinuses get inflamed when spaces around the nose are filled with too much mucus due to colds, flu, allergies, or other conditions. This can lead to pain in your head especially when you lean forward or cough/sneeze; it also causes swelling in the eyes, nausea, and vomiting. To feel better try using warm packs on your face and take pain relievers that can be bought over the counter. Keep yourself well hydrated and rest enough too. In case these signs don't go away, you should see a doctor who will check them out further and treat them accordingly.

It sounds like your son might be experiencing an eye movement disorder, which could be a sign of a neurological issue. I recommend taking him to a pediatric neurologist as soon as possible to get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

I am 30 years old. I had anxiety for 4 months and nerve damage like sciatica pain for 2 months and lower abdominal back pain and upper front pain for 3 days, today it's getting worse.

Female | 30

The stress and nerve pain that you are experiencing might cause muscle tension which results in discomfort in various parts of your body. The stomach ache as well as the pain in the anterior part could be associated with heightened awareness in your nervous system. To alleviate these symptoms, it is important to deal with both anxiety and nerve issues. Try doing mild stretches, and deep breathing exercises or seek help from healthcare providers who know how to manage such conditions.

Headache, shrinking of hands and legs, foaming at the mouth

Male | 35-40

Severe head pain which radiates to the neck with stiffening neck and the legs and foaming at the mouth are potential symptoms that can be addressed as epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain characterized by the occurrence of abnormal electrical activity, sending inappropriate signals through the nervous system. It is of course injuriously crucial to make it the first choice to see a specialist doctor in case of these symptoms. The common method for the treatment of epilepsy is drug use for control of the seizure and prevention of a future occurrence.

Actually after sneezing after few seconds I am unable to stand and my body is not responding and I am not able to move my hands and legs.

Male | 20

You might have something we call a vasovagal syncope. Some of your blood flow may change for a short time when you sneeze this is what causes the feeling of faintness and may interfere with your ability to move your hands and legs for a while. Try sitting down or lying if you feel like sneezing. Also, make sure to drink enough water and have sufficient rest always. If it happens frequently or becomes more severe, see a doctor.

Your friend could be having a panic attack. A state where the person has rapid breathing, cold hands and feet, sweaty palms, and feeling unable to move is the most common one during a panic attack. The reasons may be different but the stress or anxiety stage is often the cause. Advise your friend to breathe slowly and deeply to stay calm and composed. Offer them strong reassurance and be a steady presence to help them through it.
