Types of BMT

BMT Cost In India
(INR and Dollar)

Autologous Bone marrow transplant₹15,00,000 - ₹17,00,000 ($21,013 - $23,652)

The charges encompass various expenses related to hospitalization, such as the duration of the stay, the fees of the surgeon, the cost of the operation theater, the charges for anesthesia, and the provision of meals for both the patient and one accompanying person.

You might be curious about why the cost of bone marrow transplants in India varies for different types of procedures.

Let's explore the key factors that contribute to this variation.

Autologous Bone marrow transplantYour own bone marrow is used for this type of transplant.
Autologous costs are less as compared to allogeneic transplants.
Allogeneic Bone marrow transplantBone marrow from a 10/10 HLA matching donor (preferably a sibling) is used for this type of transplant.

Cost is higher when it comes to allogeneic because here you have to pay not only for yourself but also for your donor when it comes to tests, facilities, lab works, etc.
Haplo-Allogeneic (Haploidentical) Bone marrow transplantWhen bone marrow is used from a donor (your children, parents, sibling) that has a partial HLA match to you.

Cost is even higher in Haplo-Allogeneic transplant as the procedure is a lot more complicated so the cost and number of tests increases.

What could be the additional costs of BMT?

If you’re thinking of bone marrow transplant costs in India or anywhere else in the world, be prepared to shell out money for post- and pre-transplant facilities. You have to additionally pay for facilities such as tests, chemotherapy, post-transplant monitoring, etc.

We have carefully created an extensive guide that covers all the additional services that you might be charged for during your blood cancer treatment in India. This will help you be fully prepared for your time there. This will help you navigate any potential charges without any surprising moments.

First, we want to discuss all the costs that come under the pre-bone marrow transplant stage:

In a bone marrow transplant, the body's damaged or destroyed blood cells are replaced with new, healthy blood cells. This medical process is also known as a stem cell transplant. Bone marrow cancer treatment in India is available for certain types of cancers, like leukemia, multiple myeloma and some types of lymphoma. Stem cell transplant cost in India is approximately INR 1,49,000 (USD 2,000) for one cycle.

In the pre-bone marrow transplant stage, you will go through steps that are essential preparations for the bone marrow transplant procedure. This is the most critical stage, as it lays the foundation for the treatment.

Following is a complete guide to not only all the necessary steps you will have to take before the bone marrow transplant but also discusses the costs you will incur during this stage:

You should consider the pre- and post-transplant costs to make an accurate estimation of overall costs.

For your convenience, we have elaborated on each and every step of the pre-bone marrow transplant costs below:

Pre-bone marrow transplant cost in India:

Pre-procedure check-up tests and treatments

Cost Estimation

Health checkup

Physical examination and health check-up with an oncologist in India might cost around ₹600 ($8) - ₹5000($70)

All investigations

There are a number of investigations that will be required like a blood test, PFTs and RVG for the heart, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Chest and Dental X-ray, etc which will set you back by around ₹55,892 ($800) to ₹69,865 ($1000)

HLA typing
(if required)

HLA typing is only required in cases of an allogeneic/haploidentical transplant, which costs around ₹80,000 ($1,112.53) additionally.

Chemotherapy

Cost of chemotherapy is approximately ₹1,04,797 ($1,500) to ₹1,25,077 ($1,800) per chemo cycle.

You may also have to pay for Induction chemotherapy which will cost you approximately ₹1,38,974 ($2000) to ₹2,08,462 ($3,000).

Radiation Therapy/ Radiotherapy

A rough estimate of the cost for Radiation treatment based on the procedure or technique can range between ₹1,66,770 ($2,400) to ₹4,86,955 ($7,000) depending on the package.

Donor fees
(if required)

In the case of Allogeneic transplant, there are a number of tests and expenses related to the extraction of stem cells. This is more expensive in a haploidentical transplant. So we have to consider stem cell transplant costs in India or the country in which the treatment is going on.

Medication

Medication is prescribed for your recovery.

Pre - operations cost

Pre-operations cost, medication costs, documentation costs etc.

What costs come with the post-bone marrow transplant stage?

Once you are done with the transplant, the work is not finished. Various measures are implemented to closely track the advancement of transplantation in a patient, ensuring a swift recovery and mitigating the risk of infection.

But in cases of unforeseen situations, unanticipated monitoring, extended stays, etc., requirements will be charged separately. This is not included in the transplant cost, and hence it comes under the post-transplant stage.

For your convenience, we have elaborated on each and every step of the post-bone marrow transplant costs below:

Post-Bone Marrow Transplant Cost in India:

Monitoring and requirements
Medications costThere will be many expensive medicines prescribed to you after the transplant.
Any additional service availedAny extended hospital stay and use of services
Other consultationAny other consultation with your doctor and other consultations.
Complications management and unanticipated careThe cost of monitoring and treatment for complications management and unanticipated care is separate from the transplant cost.

If for any reason you have stayed beyond the stipulated period, you will be charged separately.

1. Currency: Basically, the Indian currency is lower than the USD, pounds, euro, etc. So obviously, everything is cost-effective here.

2. Standard of living: The standard of living is quite lower in India than the other developed countries such as the USA. So the prices of facilities in the fields of transport, overall stay, food, and medical treatment are cost-effective.

3. Competition: There are many bone marrow transplant centers in India, so you have a wider choice according to your budget of hospitals of your choosing.

4. Hospitals: India is the preferred destination for transplantation due to its renowned hospitals, which house exceptionally skilled hematologists and oncologists specializing in bone marrow transplants (BMT). A few government-run hospitals also offer free bone marrow transplants in India, or they offer their services at very nominal costs.

5. Doctor: Basically, here in India the doctors charge less compared to doctors in the other developed countries. However, the charges of doctors may vary according to their popularity, experience, and the hospitals where they practice.

There are a few other reasons why getting bone marrow transplants in India is a good option.

While blood cancer treatment in India is notably affordable compared to other developed nations, it is crucial to understand that Indian hospitals never compromise on the paramount aspects of quality and expertise.

I am 23 year old female.. I have continuous bruise on my leg and arm without hitting last 3 year.. I didn't eat any medicine.. so what should I do now?

Female | 23

An occurrence of bruising without any previous history of trauma or injury is a condition that needs attention. You are doing right not to take medicines right away. Bruising without an obvious cause could be due to low platelet count, clotting disorders, or Vitamin deficiencies. The optimal way to find out is through an in-person appointment with a specialist who will draw blood in a lab to diagnose the disease.

I'm an 18 year old female who thinks she may have Raynaud's? These are my symptoms. ### Raynaud’s Phenomenon: - **Fingers and Hands**: - Frequent color changes in response to cold, stress, or pressure: fingers turning white/yellow, blue/purple, and red during rewarming. - Numbness, pain, and stiffness, especially in cold water or when exposed to cold air. - Fingernails occasionally turn blue, particularly when nervous. - Fingers often go white under light pressure, but color returns after. - Red, painful, and numb fingers, especially when handling cold objects or after cold exposure. - Hands sometimes go pale/white in cold water, with visible blue veins. When they warm up it can feel tingly and intense heat and sometimes burning and uncomfortableness. - Ridges and a light white color underneath fingernails. - A small cut on your hand is taking longer than usual to heal. But cuts in general too. - **Feet and Toes**: - Feet often turn purple or blue when sitting still for long periods, especially without socks. - Numbness and coldness in feet, particularly when standing still or exposed to cold. - Toes sometimes appear weirdly purple/light blue/gray after cold exposure. - Difficulty standing and walking due to numbness and pain in feet, particularly in cold environments. - **General Cold Sensitivity**: - Need to wear multiple layers and use hot water bottles/heat packs to stay warm, especially at night or when sitting still. - Lips sometimes turn blue or darken when cold, especially during Raynaud’s attacks. - Occasional episodes of feeling cold despite being in a warm environment. - **Pain and Discomfort**: - Discomfort in hands and feet during cold exposure, sometimes making it difficult to perform tasks or move. ### Recent Observations: - **Improvement**: - Hands have been warmer than usual recently, with fewer Raynaud’s attacks. - **Persistent Issues**: - A cut on your hand that is slow to heal, potentially due to reduced blood circulation. - Ongoing need to protect hands and feet from cold to prevent Raynaud’s attacks.

Female | 18

It appears like you have Raynaud's Phenomenon. The condition makes your fingers and toes to change color, cause the cold and numb feeling, particularly, when you are exposed to cold or stress. This is due to blood vessels in your extremities overreacting to these triggers, thus, decreasing blood flow. The best way to do this is to wear warm clothes, gloves, and socks, and also avoid the cold that triggers such episodes.

You might have anemia, in which you don't have enough good red cells in your blood. The lack of red blood cells in your body can lead to the following symptoms fatigue, weight loss, and weakness. Anemia might be due to low iron intake in your diet, or there might be underlying diseases. So, to fix your case, you should begin to eat food that is rich in iron, you may also take supplements, or you may have some medical consultations for a check-up.

Male | 38

The fact that your test was inconclusive implies that it's still not clear if you are HIV positive or not. Regarding the symptoms of HIV, they are similar to fever, tiredness, and weight loss. More likely, bringing about can be unsafe sex or sharing needles. Therefore, you must see a doctor

Male | 39

The tests you took at 30 and 45 days are generally accurate, but for complete peace of mind, it's best to get tested again 3 months after being exposed. This is because it takes time for the immune system to make enough antibodies that can be detected by the test. In the meantime, if you start feeling unwell with symptoms such as fever, rash, sore throat or tiredness, please tell your doctor.

Male | 21

Iron deficiency can cause you to have low energy, feel weak, and may lead to malfunctioning of the human body. This is due to the insufficient intake of iron-rich foods and blood loss. Aspyfer-Z syrup boosts iron levels in your body and contains iron, amino acids, B-group vitamins, and zinc. It can be done under the supervision of your father but ensure you get a follow-up guide from a doctor.

Hello I’ve been taking 25 mg atenolol for the last few months for a fast heart rate. I currently have a hemorrhoid and I want to use preparation H to relieve it. Preparation H has 0.25% of phenyleprine in it I know that can raise blood pressure. Should I still take or is there an alternative I can try?

Female | 22

Phenylephrine can raise your blood pressure and it might be unsafe for the heart if one is on atenolol already. In case you have no idea, you can use other treatments for piles that lack this drug like say witch hazel pads alternatively try out nonprescription hydrocortisone creams too. With these substitutes in mind, there won’t be any need to worry about a thing because they will still help soothe them but without affecting or changing anything about how well the medicine works for your heart condition. Nevertheless, should there still be no relief from piles after using these methods then I would advise that you talk with a healthcare professional.

Systematic increases in immature granulocytes Good morning, Firstly, I will mention that I suffer from numerous chronic inflammatory diseases, as this may be relevant. These include Ulcerative Proctitis; Atrophic Gastritis; Last year, I also underwent two cervical electrosurgery procedures due to advanced dysplasia (CIN3). (The last colposcopy and colonoscopy did not reveal any suspicious changes) For a year now, my blood morphology tests have been showing an elevated level of immature granulocytes: The latest test (May '24) showed: Immature granulocytes IG - 0.09 thousand/µl; Norm: 0-0.04 thousand/µl Immature granulocytes IG % - 1.00; Norm: 0-0.5% The rest of the blood morphology is normal, leukocytes in urine - within the norm. Previous results (April '23): Immature granulocytes IG - 0.05 thousand/µl; Norm: 0-0.04 thousand/µl Immature granulocytes IG % - 0.7; Norm: 0-0.5% (and a very slightly elevated MCV) Even older (January '23): Immature granulocytes IG - 0.04 thousand/µl; Norm: 0-0.04 thousand/µl Immature granulocytes IG % - 0.6; Norm: 0-0.5% (and a very slightly elevated MCV and basophils) There is a clear upward trend since last year. I initially thought this was due to extreme stress (CIN3, LLETZ etc). Now I am not so sure... Are these results very concerning and indicative of a cancerous process? Can chronic inflammatory states cause an increase in IG, or is it rather some kind of “acute” disease state? Could the fact that I rode a bike to the laboratory (medium and short-term physical effort) affect the increase in results? I would be very grateful for your response and advice. Best regards, J.

Female | 40

Raised levels of these are often linked to chronic inflammation similar to stress, in this case, it is important to control them initially. With the status of attempted diagnosis for specific inflammatory conditions, your previous experience, and the new procedures on the lookout for anything new, don't hesitate to let a doctor know. It would be helpful to get solid advice from your healthcare provider concerning your test results.
