Can I Eat Leafy Greens After MVR Surgery?
Patient's Query
my mother had an MVR surgery in December 2020, at the time of discharge doctor told her to avoid green leafy vegetables, cabbage and tomatoes. After one year of periodically visiting our doctor told us the same thing but now it's been 2 years we didn't visit the doctor because of some financial issue. Now my mother's PT is 12.6 and INR is 2.8. Now can she eat leafy greens?
Answered by Dr. Babita Goel
Dark leafy vegetables are high in vitamin K, which can affect blood thinners like warfarin. High PT and INR levels mean it is taking longer for the blood to clot, indicating a potential risk if the levels are too high. Despite their heart health benefits, Mom must avoid leafy greens for now. The best thing is to consult a dietician for personalized advice and guidance.
